Verstappen is essentially saying that if someone tries to overtake him on the outside, he will consider himself entitled to push his opponent off the track. This is a completely acceptable approach for him.
Many drivers and others with F1 experience would not find this attitude acceptable. People believe that it should be possible to overtake on the outside if the attacker has positioned the car correctly, and that overtaking simply because an opponent is making an attempt is unacceptable.
If Verstappen is portrayed as a villain in some circles - it`s hard for me to judge because I don`t do that - it probably has to do with the approach to the fight.
